India’s 2026–2027 Census one of the biggest counting exercises on Earth!

Have you ever counted all the students in your classroom?

Now imagine counting every single person in India — that’s more than 1.4 billion people!

That’s exactly what India is doing with its 16th Census, which starts in April 2026 and finishes by March 2027.

🌟 What Is a Census?

A census is a giant counting activity where the government counts everyone living in the country and asks some important questions.

It’s like taking attendance for the whole nation!

People may be asked questions such as:

  • How many people live in the house?
  • What languages do they speak?
  • Do they go to school?
  • Do they have internet access?
  • What type of house do they live in?

The answers help leaders understand what people need.

🤔 Why Is a Census Important?

magine trying to build a new school without knowing how many children live nearby.

That would be difficult!

A census helps the government:

  • Build schools where they are needed
  • Improve hospitals and health services
  • Plan roads and transport
  • Provide clean water and toilets
  • Make better decisions for communities

The last census was held in 2011, so it’s time for updated information.

📱 India’s First Digital Census

This census is special because it will be the first fully digital census in India’s history.

Instead of carrying lots of paper forms, census workers will use:

📱 Mobile phones and tablets

📊 Special apps

☁️ Digital data systems

This makes the process faster and helps reduce mistakes.

🏠 Can Families Fill It Out Themselves?

Yes!

For the first time, some families will be able to use an online system to enter their information themselves.

This is called self-enumeration.

It can save time and make the process easier.

🚶 Who Collects the Information?

Special workers called enumerators will visit homes across India.

Many are:

  • Teachers
  • Government workers
  • Local officials

More than 3.4 million enumerators and supervisors will help with the census.

That’s a huge team!
